6. telephone

The guards report to their boss on wiretelephone. If they are equiped with radiophone, it is possible that they get contact with somebody in West Berlin. But with a wired telephone they can call only certain people. The East German regime thought that even the soldiers would escape and did not rely on their own soldiers.

On the top of a concrete pile is a telephone. The guards carry reciever and they connect it to the telephone when they need to call. They often call the boss, if somebody in the western side, like me, takes many pictures of the Wall.
In the photo above, the guard (right) carries a reciever in his hand. He telephoned just a moment ago and now is coming back into the vehicle.
