From watch towers they are watching so that nobody would run away from the eastern side into West Berlin. A tower in this photo is the newest type and could be seen everywhere in the 80's. It is about 10 meter high with a serchlight on its top and is occupied by two guards usually. In the photo there are some apartment houses that are seriously watched by the soldiers in the tower. Soldiers in a watch tower are watching not only for the eastern side but for West Berlin. When somebody in West Berlin try to take pictures against the Wall, guards will look at him with field glasses and call the boss with telefon. The watch tower has small black squer windows in the middle through which guards would shoot against people escaping.
