This is a concrete wall which is usually called as "the Berlin Wall". It is the fourth generation, the latest and the most tough wall. At the beginning of the wall constructin, August 1961, the barrier was only made of barbed wire and people could still jump over into the western sector. East Germany made effort to build more sophisticated barriers which would never be crossed over. The photo below is a segment of the wall that is shaped like "L", which has been used since 1976. One piece costs 359 East German Mark. They put about 45,000 pieces of the segments around West Berlin. A tube (40cm diameter) is set on the top of the segments when they are in use. |

West Berlin <--------> East Berlin |
In the late 1980's there were still old type of mesh fence or wall made from concrete plates especially in the suburbs. East Germany was demolishing these old barriers and building new one. It means that DDR was working with the Wall until the last moment of its coming down to make it more sophisticated. |
