Construction of the Wall

This page shows how a new concrete Wall is constructed in Rudow, Neukölln, 1987. In this region East Germany had an old style metal fence on the border and they demolished it and built a modern Wall.
Some guards carry fences to enclose the operating area making it impossible for workers to escape to the western side.
Soldiers are stabilizing the fence. Unbelievably one guard is working just a few stepps away from the border and there is no barrier preventing him from crossing over the border. It is unusual that a guard stands so near to the border.
Just behind the sign that says "You are leaving the American sector", they are working. The guard standing alongside the fence is only 1.5-meter away from the borderline.
The guards are using a crane to unload work materials from a military truck.
New concrete segments are placed into position. Each section appears to be in the shape of a letter L when seen from the side.
A guy cements between each parts to stabilize them. All the workers are wearing black so that the soldiers can easily watch them. Why black? Maybe the Wall is white and they are outstanding when they work in front of the Wall.
This worker is welding each segments. This seems unnecessary as the Wall is hard enough to break down without the welds. If these materials would have been consumed for public welfare, the standard of their lives would have been better.
A pipe comes down on the Wall. This pipe plays an important last roll in making the Wall into a strong barrier. An escape would have trouble trying to grip the top of the Wall since it is rounded. East German government intends to make the border really complete.
He is sliding the pipe into its correct position.
A worker is painting the Wall white and a guard(right) helps him with operating the pump. Maybe they don't know that they are wasting material, because the Wall will be painted with graffities or slogans shortly thereafter, which they could never see.
When they finish the task, workers go back to the eastern side at first, and then guards cross over the Wall into East Germany. This guy pulls up the ladder after he crimbs over the segment.
A new Wall stands 5 meters behind the border. Words on the Wall written in English proclaim "Is this our fault?? 5-9-87", written probably by an american, because this is the american sector.
