Wall 2

This is a modern segment, called "the fourth generation." It is 3.6 meter high, 15 cm thick. The construction of this segment was begun in the 1976. The Wall has a pipe (diameter 40cm) on its top, so that it is hard to grip when trying to cross over the Wall. (Köthener St., Tiergarten)
This is an old segment consisting of concrete plates, "the third generation." Some concrete piles and the barbed wires seen in the photo were put to seal off West Berlin before the Wall was constructed. (Frohnau, Reinickendorf)
This is an ancient type, "the second generation," which was made after November 1961. Concrete panels are laid. Berlin has been offcially occupied by the USA, Great Britain, France and Soviet Union until the reunification of Germany. The sign means the end of american sector. (Steinstücken, Zehlendorf)
This is the Wall that was constructed at the very beginning, "the first generation" made of blockstones. Surprisingly this kind of the segment remains in the middle of the 80's. The sign says the end of France sector. (Blankenfelder Chaussee, Reinickendorf)
In countryside segment is not only concrete Wall, but mesh net in many places. In this photo the no-man's-land is so narrow and some houses are beyond the Wall in East Germany, not in East Berlin. (Ostpreußendamm, Zehlendorf)
This type of mesh net fence was reconstructed into a modern type segment through the 80's by East Germany. This place may be also planed for renewal if there had been still East Germany. (Machnower St., Zehlendorf)

The top picture shows an old type of Wall that was reconstructed into a new mesh net fence shown in the photo(underneath). Why did East Germany build a new fence? In 1987 a world wide famous bicycle race the "Tour de France" was held in West Berlin. This street was a part of its course and it might have been that the filming of this Wall could have been sent through the airwaves to other countries. For the government of East Germany it was a dishonour. They may have thought that this part of the fence would be better to see than an older Wall. (Potsdamer Chaussee, Spandau)
